Systems Design

Understands the fundamentals of systems design from user requirements to a preferred solution.

Proficiency levels

Level Description
Practitioner
  • Can design space systems at concept level and perform trade-offs between different concepts and design solutions.
  • Can analyse weaknesses and strengths of relevant technologies in the context of the system design.
  • Can balance technical, cost, and schedule constraints when selecting and justifying an optimum solution.
  • Can generate mission and spacecraft architectures, spacecraft system block diagrams, and basic ConOps.
  • Can model different parts of the system to aid design and assess performance (e.g. power generation, power usage, orbital manoeuvres and delta V budget).
Aware
  • Can describe the key terms and fundamental principles of space system concept design, trade-offs between different concepts and designs, and Concept of operations (ConOps).
  • Can describe how to generate simple architecture and system block diagrams.
  • Can describe the need to model different parts of the system to aid design and determine potential system performance.
Senior Practitioner
  • Can design complex space systems, perform complex trade-offs, and can consider novel technologies for concepts and system design.
  • Can design and review complex ConOps.
  • Can critically review system designs, system modelling, and advise on recommended approaches.
Expert
  • Can lead and mentor teams in conducting system trade-offs and complex design reviews.
  • Can lead collaborations on the development of space system standards and best practices.
  • Can innovate in areas such as digital engineering, Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), or AI-enhanced design processes.
