Design circuit boards

Design electronic circuits using computer aided design (CAD) software to meet functional specifications, implement those circuits into printed circuit boards, and test the unit against adherence to specifications

Proficiency levels

Level Description
Aware
  • Can describe key terms and fundamental principles related to circuit design using computer aided design (CAD) software and the production of printed circuit boards (PCBs).
  • Can describe the general process of designing circuits to meet specifications, including layout, routing, and component selection.
  • Can outline the importance of testing circuits to verify basic functionality.
Practitioner
  • Can design electronic circuits to meet functional specifications and implement those circuits into PCBs considering factors such as signal integrity, component placement, and power management.
  • Can conduct basic testing and debugging of circuits to ensure functionality, adherence to specifications, and performance under expected operating conditions.
  • Can describe the importance of thermal management and mechanical constraints in PCB design for spacecraft applications.
  • Can produce design documentation to support manufacturing and verification processes.
Senior Practitioner
  • Can design complex, multi-layer circuit boards to meet specific functional, environmental, and performance requirements, including radiation-hardened design, EMI/EMC considerations, thermal constraints, and power efficiency.
  • Can plan and conduct thorough testing programs including defining testing methodologies, model philosophy, and success criteria (e.g. vibration, thermal cycling, and vacuum testing).
  • Proficient in debugging, and optimisation of circuit designs to ensure reliability, performance, and compliance with industry standards.
  • Can collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to integrate PCBs into spacecraft subsystems (e.g. avionics, communications).
Expert
  • Can innovate and develop new methodologies and technologies for circuit design using CAD software and PCB implementation.
  • Can demonstrate expertise in addressing unique space environment challenges, including radiation effects (e.g. SEE, TID), thermal extremes, weight constraints, and long-duration reliability.
  • Can lead the development of fault-tolerant, high-reliability circuit designs to meet mission-critical requirements.
  • Can mentor and advise teams on advanced circuit design techniques and emerging technologies.
